Start the conversation →Why SRL
Personal wealth does not exist in isolation. For business owners, executives, and families with real complexity, a portfolio strategy disconnected from your pension, executive benefits, deferred compensation, and estate plan is only part of the answer — and often the smaller part.
SRL is one of a small number of advisory firms that genuinely integrates both worlds. We bring deep, specialized knowledge in pension design, ERISA fiduciary responsibility, and executive benefits — and we use that knowledge to inform every personal wealth and estate planning decision we make. The result is a more complete strategy than most clients have ever had.
Defined benefit plans, cash balance plans, non-qualified deferred compensation, and group benefits are complex instruments that carry significant tax and estate implications. We hold the AIF® and CEBS designations specifically because this expertise matters — and most advisers simply don't have it.
When your investment adviser and your retirement plan consultant are the same firm, decisions stop happening in silos. We coordinate your personal portfolio, your plan assets, your tax strategy, and your estate plan as a single integrated whole — which is where the real value is created.
Many of our clients come to us after years with advisers who never flagged the tax savings available through a properly designed Cash Balance plan, or the estate planning leverage inside a deferred compensation structure, or the Roth conversion window that opens when compensation is deferred. These are not exotic strategies — they are well-established tools that require the knowledge to see them and the expertise to implement them.
Client situations
The following are illustrative of the types of situations we serve. Client identities are not disclosed.
A founder in the medical sector came to us with substantial personal assets built over a career — and a new venture that carried meaningful liability risk. The challenge: protect what had already been built while simultaneously planning for a liquidity event that could be transformative.
Our focus
A law firm asked us to evaluate their existing retirement plan. What we found: poor plan design and an excessive fee structure that was quietly working against the senior partners. By redesigning the plan and adding a Cash Balance component, we dramatically improved outcomes for the firm's leadership.
What we did & what happened
A company engaged us to restructure executive benefits so that top-level leaders could defer meaningful portions of their compensation. What appeared to be a benefits exercise became a multi-layered tax and estate planning opportunity — reducing current income, creating room for Roth conversions, and laying the groundwork for more efficient wealth transfer.
Our focus
A client came to us with a significant portfolio of brokerage accounts and inherited IRAs that had been poorly managed — the inherited IRAs were left untouched by the prior adviser, missing both the opportunity and the obligation to properly position them. We corrected the structure, aligned the assets with the family's estate goals, and built a plan designed to serve the next generation.
What we did
The situations above are illustrative of client types and planning approaches. They do not represent specific client testimonials or guarantee similar outcomes. Past results are not indicative of future performance.
